Testosterone is a steroid hormone that is synthesized in the Leydig cells of the testes in males; however, it is present in women, being produced in adrenal glands and the ovaries. Its synthesis is controlled by luteinizing hormone (LH), which is produced by the hypothalamus and secreted by the pituitary gland, which in turn targets the Leydig cells within the testes. This represents the pituitary–hypothalamic–gonadal negative feedback axis. The primary substrate for the production of testosterone is cholesterol.
